葛藤，芝加哥大学社会学系博士候选人。研究方向为文化全球化，不平等，组织表现和体育社会学。他的博士论文通过比较观察中国职业男子篮球运动员在征召入选、身体实践、和职业流动三个过程中的差异，说明美国职业篮球训练模式是如何在国内被中国球员同时接纳和挑战。他的博士论文研究受到芝加哥大学，北京大学，香港中文大学，海外中国青年论坛等机构的支持。

内容提要

Limited attention has been given to how Western cultural values and practices are transposed globally, especially in rising powers like China. 

Drawing on a processual study of the emerging Chinese basketball industry, my project examines how Chinese basketball players response to the diffusion of American basketball culture. 

First, instead of viewing the diffusion of American basketball culture as a normative isomorphic change, I find that the American basketball culture is both accepted and contested in China. Second, I further discovered that China’s different responses to American basketball culture is contingent upon on Chinese basketball practitioners’ social origin. Chinese basketball players who come from privileged backgrounds – highly achieved athletic parents, above average family income, decent academic performance, and residency in developed regions – are more likely to embrace American basketball values and practices and challenge Chinese basketball training authorities throughout their whole career. I call this kind of training regime as strategic contestation. In contrast, players from disadvantaged social origins tend to defer to Chinese training authorities and refute American basketball training model – a training regime I referred as concerted indoctrination. 

These findings suggest that the global cultural diffusion is inevitably intertwined with local stratifications, and the Western culture is constantly negotiated and contested in developing countries like China.
